Food for beer pairing

Nothing brings people together quite like a good beer. Whether you’re on the dock, out in the yard or just sharing a brew with your neighbour, a cold beer is the hallmark of a perfect Pontiac summer afternoon. Even more so when it comes from the Pontiac’s first Microbrewery Brauewerk Hoffman.

Todd Hoffman is the man behind the brand. His unmatched passion for traditional German beer-making, inspired him to create a beer worthy of his name and his hard work and ingenuity brought them to market here in the Pontiac to the delight of his customers who can’t seem to get enough.

For Hoffman , brewing is much more than just hops, malt, yeast and water. Tapping into the long-standing tradition of German beer making, Hoffman also works to create new tastes and styles. His latest offering, Berliner Weisse, Raspberry Sour, is brewed with local raspberries and balances barley and wheat malt to create a refreshing rose-hued drink.

Beer is a natural complement to delicious meats hot off the grill. With this in mind, Hoffman offers the following beer and barbeque pairings to heat up your summertime get-togethers.

BBQ Chicken Sandwich

Sometimes nothing beats a good barbeque grilled chicken sandwich, either smothered in barbeque sauce or cooked with a nice layer of buffalo glaze on it for that extra kick. It’s a go-to happy food that’s always good to sink your teeth into while enjoying a good beer.

For a sandwich like this, you’ll need something with enough hop character to stick out, but in a way that complements the food. Even with all the sauces and spices, chicken is still a food that needs something to hit through that texture to make a wonderful meal. For that, I’d most likely pick my favourite Hellis Pale Ale. The light body won’t get in the way of the barbeque sauce and the smooth flavour will cut through even the driest of chickens making it an overall delicious experience.

Smoked Brisket

Smoked Brisket is the ultimate barbeque food. It takes a minimum of 12 hours to smoke. Cooks get the whole day to hang out in the backyard or at the cottage. Done right, you end up with an incredibly moist and smoky brisket with a perfect crust that melts in your mouth.

One of the best types of beer to pair brisket with is something dark and rich, which will go well with this delicious meat and act as a kind of refreshing gravy. Our Dark is a perfect pairing. The flavours of coffee and notes of cocoa will be a more than welcome addition to the rich flavours of the brisket.

Burgers

The mighty barbeque staple, the traditional burger loaded up with cheese and bacon was born to be paired with a cold beer on a summer day.

Todd Recommends

A good burger, tender with a bit of spice and the regular host of condiments goes best with our 1989 IPA which adds to the flavours nicely. It’s a hazy hybrid with a gentle topical fruit kick and enough backbone to complement the burger well.

Hot Dogs and Sausages

An essential barbeque offering, from a simple pack of Red Hots to homemade sausages, all are welcome. A barbeque just would not be the same without these as an option.

Todd Recommends

For both of these foods, I feel that a good wheat beer will pair well. Hefeweizen will bring out a smooth mouthfeel with hints of banana and clove to be a cool refreshing beer that complements hot dogs and sausage fantastically.
