Are you looking for a way to turn your backyard into a smoke show this summer? From roasting marshmallows to keeping the bugs away when enjoying an evening outside, fires and summer have always complemented one another. This is probably why one of the hottest (no pun intended) backyard accessories of 2021 is the fire pit!
The pandemic has fanned the flames of home improvement, and outdoor living can’t be forgotten. Renovations and new decor has become a means to turn your home into a getaway and safely enjoy new surroundings while staying put. During the summer, it’s important to spend as much time outside as possible after being cooped up all winter. One way to entice you to spend more time in the great outdoors is by installing a fire pit in your yard!
Humans have had a fascination with fire from the beginning of time. We have used it as a source of light and warmth, a means to cook, and a focal point for social events. Fire pits are one way we’ve domesticated fire and made it safer for everyone to enjoy. By having a designated, controlled environment for the flames, the risk of the fire spreading is greatly reduced.
There are so many alternatives to traditional wood burning fire pits, and some such as gas or propane even have a glass panel that keeps you away from the flames. Designs vary from simple bowls to elaborate tables, but before you choose, ensure that your design suits the by-laws in place in your area (see side bar for MRC Pontiac’s guidelines). Purchasing a fire pit doesn’t have to be a commitment either, as portable fire pits do exist!
Campfires have always been a hazard, so fire pits are a necessary alternative for both aesthetic and safety. They ensure the flame is off the ground which means less chance of the fire spreading. If you want to be extra safe, a propane fire pit is your best bet as they don’t send out sparks, can cool down quickly and are easy to turn off. Another benefit is that often even during a fire ban, propane fire pits can be used (again, please check in with the fire by-laws in your area as this can vary). This option is essentially as easy as using a propane barbecue.
No matter what you choose, your new fire pit will bring warmth and light to your summer nights and beyond. Surely you’ll see sparks fly by the fireside even after the summer ends, as having a fire pit as a heat source can extend the outdoor entertaining season! With a few blankets and warm drinks, you’ll be enjoying your outdoor space further into the fall and winter than ever before!
By putting out the flames of pandemic boredom with a beautiful fire pit, you’ll be creating a setting to create lasting memories. Campfire stories, anyone? Fire pits add an allure and ambiance that will truly bring the heat to your backyard. And always remember: before you leave your fireside, ensure the fire is out.
Know the Rules
