The Quyon Ferry gears up for its record-setting early start tomorrow, March 7, 2024!
Spring’s early arrival brings with it an extraordinary milestone for the Quyon Ferry. Tomorrow will mark the earliest opening in recent history, a record setting move largely attributed to this year’s unseasonably high temperatures.
This year’s projected opening on March 7 not only surpasses the usual late March to early April schedule but also marks the earliest launch in the ferry’s operation since its inception. According to a recent update from the ferry’s co-owner, Ralph McColgan, this unprecedented early start, scheduled for 5:30 a.m., breaks the previous record set on March 16, 2016, and is the earliest since the 1950s. The ferry’s readiness this year is partly due to a lighter maintenance season, enabling quicker preparations for its seasonal operation.
Last year, the Quyon Ferry commenced its season on March 25, and in 2022, operations began on April 1, highlighting this year’s significant advancement in the operational calendar. As temperatures continue to rise, the early opening of the Quyon Ferry symbolizes a broader trend towards warmer seasons, prompting discussions on climate impacts and adaptation strategies for regional transportation services.
As the Ottawa area welcomes the Quyon Ferry’s record-setting early return, residents and businesses alike look forward to reaping the benefits of enhanced connectivity across the river. This historic early opening not only highlights the ferry’s integral role in local transportation but also sets a positive tone for the spring season, promising increased mobility and economic activity in the region.
